Art Curation & Exhibition Management

Learning the art of curating and exhibition management is a central skill for artists, gallerists, museums/fair directors, and educators. This short course will shed light and demystify ‘curation techniques’ with a systematic approach to creating and managing art exhibitions and installations.

Join us for an immersive and practical short course designed to equip you with the essential skills and strategies for curating effectively and coordinating art exhibitions. An essential element of the course will show you how to adapt to the needs and desires of visitors. Understanding the curation process and acquiring new techniques will enable you to become more agile and skilled in successfully exhibiting art. The course will empower you with the knowledge and tactics used by leading curators and experts in the art sales industry. Throughout the course, we will use case studies to share the entire exhibition process, from how to turn good ideas into real exhibitions, to proposals, pitches and beyond.

Any prior knowledge/experience needed to benefit from this session? 

No previous experience is required but some note taking is needed. This course will be of interest followers of art and any creative practice that are keen to expand their perspectives of face-to-face art sales, to develop lasting relationships with collectors and buyers.

Easy to understand lessons:

Our tutors will explain in easy to understand English and if they use any special terminology, they ensure they explain what it means.

We even include live demonstrations of particular techniques so that you can see exactly how things should be done.

Learning resources for you to access outside of live lessons. This allows you to practice, review and develop your skills.

A Certificate of Completion:

As long as you attend a minimum of 80% if your classes, we will provide you with a certificate of attendance. You’ve put the hard work in, so we want to make sure you have something to show for it. Certificates are a great way to build your CV.

These four sessions will offer you a systematic approach to curation and exhibition management. Whether you are an artist looking to curate your own work, or an art professional looking to step into art exhibition management, the course offers step-by-step instructions to help you become consistent and increase your knowledge of taking ideas to reality.

Stephanie Dieckvoss

Stephanie has over 15 years experience of working in commercial art galleries and art fairs, and a wealth of experience in cultural management in the public and private sector. She managed the Anish Kapoor Exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery and raised over £2 million for the expansion of the Serpentine Gallery by organising their charity auction in partnership with Sotheby’s. She was Fair Manager for Frieze Art Fair from its launch until 2006, Co-Director of Art HK: Hong Kong International Art Fair from 2007-2009 and Fair Director of Art 13-Art15 from 2012 – 2014. She now consults independently and writes for the German Financial Newspaper The Handelsblatt as well as the Neue Züricher Zeitung as their London art market correspondent. Stephanie also directed the MA Art Market & Appraisal at Kingston School of Art, London, UK, until 2021.

Emily- Jean Alexander

Emily- Jean Alexander

Emily-Jean Alexander is an experienced & certified Project Management Professional (PMP) working in the Canadian and International arts & cultural sectors both professionally and through volunteer service for over 10 years. With extensive experience in producing art events, Emily-Jean helped with the direction, management, and production of 3 editions of The Other Art Fair Chicago, 5 editions of The Other Art Fair Brooklyn, 8 editions of Art Toronto and 6 editions of Artist Project. Through contract positions in the cultural sector she has worked with municipal cultural services as well as also with local non-profit art organizations managing strategic projects.

Maeve Doyle

Maeve Doyle

Maeve Doyle is an internationally renowned art critic, broadcaster, and Global Artistic Director of the Maddox Gallery group.

Studying at the Emily Carr University of Art & Design in Vancouver, Canada, Doyle previously founded London gallery, Doyle Devere, and was a Director at Mayfair’s infamous Bankrobber gallery, an institution best known for its sale of the Banksy mural ‘Slave Labour’ and ‘Girl with Balloon’.

Currently working at Maddox Gallery, a globally celebrated contemporary art gallery based in Mayfair, Doyle provides the team with unique insights and a wealth of industry knowledge, helping the gallery situate itself in the ever-changing landscape of the art world.

She is both a BBC Arts correspondent, as well as the host of her own podcast, ‘A Private View with Maeve Doyle’ on Soho radio’s culture channel. She has also participated in other art broadcasts such as co-hosting ‘Goldie: The Art That Made Me’ on Sky Arts.

An esteemed thought-leader within the industry, Doyle has led panel discussions at many art fairs, including Wimbledon Art Fair, London Art Fair, The Other Art Fair & Art on a Postcard. She also has curated and led tours for Browns Hotel, Ham yard Hotel, The Lanesborough, Four Seasons and Soho House.

Karen is an Artist Manager, Fine Art Auctioneer and Consultant Expert with a Degree in Fine Art Evaluation, previously working as a Gallery Manager for Blue Dot Art & Whitewall Galleries – in addition to this was she was also a partner of White Rose Publishing. With a successful history working as an Art Broker, having sold pieces for the likes of Banksy, Karen found that she was representing and helping Artists on a regular basis achieve more sales and reaching their goals. Now she has joined forces with The VAA as our Artists Mentor.

Louise Minnaar

Louise Minnaar

Based in South Africa; Louise followed her passion for art early on, attending Art School for 4 years and going on to achieve a degree in education. Louise brings over 8 years’ experience in the art industry, from art auctions all over the world to working with one of the largest publishers in the UK with Whitewall Galleries. Louise has helped clients from all walks of life get happily involved in collecting artwork, from not only the likes of Picasso and Miro, but also exciting up-and-comers at all stages in their art careers.
