1. What methods or practices have helped you most effectively refine your artistic voice?
I have tried to enjoy the process and prioritise how I feel about my work. The most important factor is without doubt spending time with each piece of work and allowing it to speak to me. With this, I find out if it is complete, has a route towards completion or if I should give it some extra time in the future and leave it alone for a while. If I feel the work speaks to me then I assume it will be the same for at least one other person who takes time to listen.
2. Can you share a moment when expressing your artistic identity led to a significant opportunity or connection?
The first opportunity to exhibit some of my photographic work outside of my undergraduate studies was personally significant as my artistic voice was starting to develop and a local arts organisation chose my work to feature in their exhibition. This connection reinforced my ideas and how I was approaching subject matters which interested me.
3. How has overcoming personal challenges shaped the way you approach and communicate your art?
I usually use the challenges which I have experienced and overcome to inform the work I produce. I feel that beyond the apparent simplicity of much of my work lies an opportunity to explore what one sees, to reflect on personal experiences and consider ones own axioms.
