Maria Pierides
Gallery Room 5 – Curators Choice
In my paintings, I render in colour the stories of the physical and emotional landscapes that formed my experience of being born in Greece and then growing up in England and Cyprus and now living and working in Wales.

Cherry Blossom | £460 | 40x40cm | Oil, oil stick, pastel and wax on cradled panel
Inspired by my sisters lockdown story I collaborated with my mum and haiku poet, Stella Pierides, who wrote haiku poems responding to the story. These poems then became the starting point for this series of paintings.
Cascading Light | £300 | 20x20cm | Oil, oil stick, collage, pastel gold leaf and wax on cradled panel
Submerged | £200 | 16x16cm | Oil, pastel, oil stick, gold leaf, sand, sawdust and wax on cradled panel
I am surrounded by nature and usually, the colours sing, but with relentless rain during lockdown, the feeling became more enclosed and this feeling inspired my series called Submerged.
