American Figurative Painter, Bobbye Cochran, discusses the creative processes, embracing uncertainty, and the importance of experimenting when cultivating artistic identity.

Bobbye was born in the American Midwest, where her artistic spirit was initially nurtured by both of her parents, but quite especially, her mother. After childhood, Bobbye would go on to pursue her passion and earn a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, before making a home in Chicago and finding her agent there- catapulting her career forward. In addition to her fine art, Bobbye has thrived as an award-winning illustrator and graphic designer. Being named National Illustrator of the Year by Adweek Magazine and earning a spot among Chicago’s 27 Designers.

‘I believe art has the power to evoke distinct emotions and experiences, offering a platform for personal interpretation that speaks to the complexity of the human spirt.’

My day begins with stretching, followed by preparing for the day and heading to my personal studio at Mana Contemporary. The renovated 9-story building houses about 300 artist studios, fostering a vibrant creative community. A 10-minute commute brings me to my spacious studio with 16-foot ceilings and a large 12 x 6-foot window, bathing the space in light. I read, listen to artist podcasts, or doodle in my sketchbook to warm up. Music sets the tone as I paint for a few hours.

Some mornings each week are dedicated to paperwork and social media tasks. My day concludes with a sense of accomplishment, looking forward to the next day of artistic exploration.

The cornerstone of wisdom that has profoundly shaped my artistic journey stems from my parents’ enduring advice, emphasizing an unshakable belief in my ability to turn any ambition into reality through persistent clarity and commitment.

Equally impactful has been the lesson in perseverance, urging me to be tenacious even in moments of waning motivation. These principles, woven throughout my tenure as an illustrator and graphic designer, have etched an unwavering discipline. They underscore the paramount importance of maintaining a steadfast artistic routine.

As I navigate the realm of fine art, this foundational wisdom remains my compass, empowering and invigorating every step of my creative journey

Describe your creative process, from the first spark of inspiration to the finished product, what does your work aim to say?
Karin Merx

To me, the creative process is a journey blending imagination, technique, and emotion. It begins with a thought that triggers my path forward. It’s like a winding road, with smooth stretches and areas that need revisiting. The creative process is not without its uncertainties; doubt frequently emerges as an unwelcome companion. Some portions of the painting seamlessly come together, while others grapple to find their place within the composition.

Research and exploration follow, as I gather reference and refine concepts through sketches on my iPad. As these concepts solidify, the focus shifts to the selection of materials. Choices like Flashe, oil, or pastels each offer a distinct style of mark-making.

Challenges lead to experimentation, refining and evolving the work. An emotional connection emerges as personal experiences influence the art. Approaching completion, I sometimes invert the canvas or take a break to gain fresh insight before revisiting the piece.

This process captures the essence of transforming inspiration into a tangible expression, whether I like the outcome or not, it’s a journey I embrace.

My artistic focus lies in capturing the essence of impressionistic portraits and landscapes through bold and expressive mark-making. I work in mediums such as oil, Flashe, and acrylics. I prefer high-contrast palettes and the interplay between linear forms and atmospheric elements, a balance that naturally captivates me.

With each artwork, I intend to evoke an immediate visual and emotional response. At the same time, I strive to infuse my creations with an organic richness inviting deeper exploration of their depths and colors.

I strive to inspire self-discovery, inviting viewers to craft their own personal stories. I believe art has the power to evoke distinct emotions and experiences, offering a platform for personal interpretation that speaks to the complexity of the human spirt.

‘Continue to foster your creativity, embracing challenges, and broadening your horizons.’

I think the outlook is what art making is all about. How we think about our art isn’t just a part of the process, I think it is the most important step. I aim for emotional expression over mere production, valuing the journey more than the outcome.

I strive to approach my art with a sense of wonder, exploration and openness. Quieting the inner voices can be challenging, yet I strive to embrace uncertainty and self-trust. I want to paint what I feel not what I see. Ultimately, I want to give my audience the ability to share that experience.

From my perspective, achieving success in the realm of art primarily revolves around having the opportunity and dedicated time to engage in artistic pursuits that both captivate my interest and present unique personal challenges. This pursuit ultimately leads to a gratifying and enriching experience.

I am very mindful of the sheer privilege I enjoy by being able to participate in the art world, as it grants me the means to bring my creations to life. My sense of achievement extends beyond personal fulfillment; it encompasses the way my work resonates with others. While my creative journey often takes place in solitude, I am fully aware of the pivotal role that viewers play – my creations rely on an audience to truly come to life and ideally, to forge meaningful connections

Do you have a particular outlook that guides you? What is your definition of artistic success?

What accomplishments are you most proud of and why? What career goal is your current priority?

Karin Merx

After nearly a year on a waitlist, I’ve finally secured my new studio at Mana Contemporary. This renovated factory, now serves as a haven for a diverse community of 300 artists and also provides a platform for collaborative ventures in a creative atmosphere.

The inclusion in multiple group shows, both in person and online, is a source of pride. These experiences mark milestones in my journey, and I eagerly look forward to more opportunities on the horizon.

My disciplined approach keeps me on track, serving as a strong foundation for my pursuits. Above all, I am profoundly grateful and proud to be an emerging artist. This career path is a dream realized, filled with wonder and endless possibilities

I am currently dedicated to the career goal of creating cohesive and harmonious bodies of artwork within a series, primarily centered around portraits and landscapes. While I’m passionate about these, I’m also intrigued by unexplored creative realms, motivating me to examine new mediums like collage, ceramics, and three-dimensional art.

Another important aspiration of mine is to not only participate in group exhibitions but also to establish a mutually enriching partnership with a respected art gallery. This collaboration would act as a pivotal link, expanding my creative horizons and extending the reach of my art to a broader and more engaged audience.

Finally, is there anything you would like to say to the artist you were a year ago?
