With a family background in the art world and in modern British painting in particular\, Richard branched out and opened his own gallery in Brighton 2005 specialising in contemporary photography. \nThe gallery has established a reputation for providing a platform to showcase the work of mostly up-and-coming\, young British and some International artists. The gallery has held solo exhibitions by artists such as Polly Borland\, Simon Roberts\, Jane Hilton\, Tim Flach and the late Michael Ormerod\, as well as the work of international photographers such as Terry Richardson\, Joseph Szabo\, Karine Laval and Hans van der Meer. \nRichard also continues to work with emerging young photographers through the annually held Cream Graduate Showcase exhibition. He lectures in Professional Practice at Universities giving advice to students on photography and careers in the art world\, and hosts portfolio review sessions for BA and MA students. Prior to working in the arts industry\, Laura was a solicitor specialising in Employment Law for over 15 years. \nTamara Andjus is a professional artist based in Zurich\, Switzerland\, whose work is best known for its abstract figurative style\, dynamic brushstrokes\, and vibrant use of colour. Working primarily with acrylics and oils on canvas\, she creates emotionally charged depictions of animals\, landscapes\, and people\, inviting viewers into layered worlds of movement\, mood\, and interpretation. Her work has been exhibited internationally in cities including New York\, Paris\, London\, Rome\, Dubai\, and Zurich\, and has been widely published and awarded. She is represented by several galleries\, including Fame Gallery in Zurich and Gallery Steiner in Vienna. \nTabish Khan is an art critic specialising in London’s art scene\, with a strong commitment to making art accessible to everyone. He visits and writes about hundreds of exhibitions each year\, from major blockbusters to emerging artists\, and has been Visual Arts Editor at Londonist since 2013. Tabish is a regular contributor to FAD – where he writes weekly exhibition round-ups\, reviews\, and the column What’s Wrong With Art-as well as Culture Whisper. He is a trustee of ArtCan\, City & Guilds of London Art School\, and Discerning Eye\, and is frequently invited to speak on radio\, television\, and panels about exhibitions and contemporary art. \nOriginally from France\, David Venon moved to the UK 20 years ago after completing Visual Arts studies and obtaining a degree in Fashion Design. With over 15 years’ experience in the service industry and content creation\, he joined Artfinder in 2019 as Community Manager and was later promoted to Head of Artist Recruitment & Engagement\, overseeing a team of curators and a global community of more than 4\,000 artists. David now works freelance as an art life coach and is a regular guest speaker at artist-focused events. \nRichard Kalman is the founder and owner of Crane Kalman Brighton\, which he established in 2005\, specialising in contemporary photography. Her work is held in private collections worldwide. \nSofía Ruiz is a Costa Rican artist whose paintings blend realism\, texture\, and surrealist imagery to explore themes of memory\, identity\, and otherness. Trained in painting and printmaking at the University of Costa Rica\, she has participated in residencies in Argentina\, Cuba\, South Korea\, and the United States\, and has exhibited in over 35 shows across Latin America\, Europe\, Asia\, and North America – including at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris\, the Museum of Costa Rican Art\, and the European Museum of Modern Art in Barcelona. DESCRIPTION:Join an Artist Development Session – a VAA Member Benefit \nAs a Visual Artists Association (VAA) member\, you’re invited to take part in our Artist Development Sessions – small group sessions led by a VAA Artist Mentor. These sessions are designed to help you work through anything that may be holding you back in your practice\, ask questions in a supportive environment\, and connect with fellow artists. \nThese one-hour sessions take place online via Zoom and have been described by members as “invaluable”. Alongside mentor guidance\, you’ll also have the chance to meet other VAA members. \nAbout the Lead \nAmy Jobes is a contemporary landscape painter based in North Devon\, whose practice is deeply inspired by the dramatic coastline\, expansive skies\, and natural environments of the region. Her work explores themes of connection\, presence\, and the emotional and psychological responses we experience through nature\, resulting in paintings created intuitively and with strong emotional depth. Alongside her own practice\, Amy is one of the artist mentors at the Visual Artists Association and has co-led the VAA Momentum course\, supporting artists in developing sustainable and confident careers. A comprehensive school\, Oxford-educated artist based in the UK\, Ellie holds two MAs – one in Fine Art and one in Philosophy – and is currently researching for a PhD in art and aesthetics. \nHer practice has received international recognition from the Abu Dhabi Arts Society\, and her work features in the celebrated collection of Magdalen College\, Oxford. Ellie received fine art training in human and comparative anatomy at the Oxford Department of Human Anatomy and Genetics\, to the level of Renaissance artists Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo\, and has undertaken extensive private study of old masters in the King’s Collection at Windsor. \nHer current research draws on elements of belief within myths and philosophies of the Far East\, India\, South America\, and the British Isles\, forming the basis of a forthcoming exhibition on humanity’s relationship to monetary value.
